UC OATS Servers

UC OATS provides multiple server environments that allow campuses to operate the system, test new features, and conduct training without impacting live campus data. Understanding the purpose of each server helps App Admins safely test changes and prepare for system updates. Please note that the Release server is only available when future feature releases need to be tested by campuses. The two servers you will use regularly are Production and Training.

Server Type Overview

There are three UC OATS servers for each campus. The following will provide a brief description of each server.

Server Type Description Users
Production The Production server is the official UC OATS environment used by the campus for daily operations. Because this environment contains live campus data, administrators should avoid performing testing or experimental changes in Production. Use the training environment to test features. Faculty, Reviewers, Approvers, Auditors, App Admins

Training (Sandbox)

The Training server, also referred to as the Sandbox environment, is used for practice and training.

This environment contains a copy of the previous day’s production data, allowing administrators and reviewers to explore the system without affecting live records. Any changes made in the Training environment do not affect the Production environment.

Release

The Release server is used to preview upcoming UC OATS updates.

When new system updates are developed, they may be first deployed to the Release environment so campuses can review the changes before they are implemented in Production.

The Release server is not always active. It is typically available only when a new UC OATS release is ready for campus testing.

Identifying Non-Production Environments

UC OATS provides visual indicators to help users identify when they are working outside of the Production system.

Example of UC OATS training website url
  1. Server URL: The server URL indicates which environment you are currently using. Always confirm the URL before performing administrative actions.
  2. Site banner: Non-production environments display a banner at the top of the page indicating that the site is not the live production system.
