Faculty Time and Earnings Threshold

This article provides an overview of faculty time and earnings thresholds. According to policy, faculty are allowed the following time and earnings threshold to engage in outside professional activities:

• Time: 168 hours (21 days)
• Earnings: Maximum annual threshold up to $40,000 or 40% of the fiscal year base salary (scale 0), whichever is greater based on individual faculty member's rank and step

Faculty's time and earning thresholds may be lower than what is allowed by policy. Time and earning thresholds are determined by the campus and may vary by department. 

Time Threshold Copied to next Fiscal Year

When you move forward to the next fiscal year for the first time, the system will automatically copy your current thresholds into the next fiscal year. You will receive the below message. Your time and earnings threshold may be adjusted by your campus UC OATS administrator when updated faculty data is uploaded into the system.
