This article provides details on what happens in the system when each of the Activity Types is selected. 


Multiple actions can occur when each faculty member chooses an activity type. The following is an explanation of each kind of action.

IP Questions

The following are the IP questions that appear when a faculty member selects some of the activity types.

IP Question

Does this activity use or propose to use intellectual property (IP) developed at the University of California (using University resources)?*

  • If yes
    •  Have you consulted with your campus technology management office?*
  • If yes
    • A license agreement is under review or in place.
    • UC has released the intellectual property.
Did you or do you plan to create any IP in your outside activity (and assign your rights to the entity)?*

Did you make any invention and/or create any non-scholarly/non-aesthetic copyright material (e.g. software) in the course of your outside activity?

  • If yes
    • Disclaimer: Please provide documentation of communication with your campus technology management/licensing staff in the NOTES section OR if you have not yet contacted your campus technology management/licensing staff, please disclose immediately such intellectual property to that office.

In-Kind Questions show on Category I form

The In-Kind questions will appear on a Category I form if any of the following Category types are selected:

  • Administration of a grant outside the University
  • Research outside the University
  • Talent recruitment programs sponsored by a government agency of a nation other than the United States

COI email notification

An email notification will be sent to your campus COI contact any time a faculty member submits a new activity with the following: 

  1. Non-US Organization - Answer Yes to the following question: "To the best of your knowledge, is this a non-U.S. organization?."
  2. Category I types - Select one of the following:
    • Administration of a grant outside the University
    • Honorary, visiting, adjunct, or other institutional appointment (either compensated or uncompensated) at an institution
    • Talent recruitment programs sponsored by a government agency of a nation other than the United States

Faculty Administrators may serve on up to three boards. Certain activity categories are automatically counted as a board toward this limit when selected.
